Budget Proposal Would Set Back Alzheimer’s Progress

Washington, DC (June 5, 2025) – Details released today on the President’s budget proposal signal devastating setbacks for research to end Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia.

UsAgainstAlzheimer’s Co-Founder and Executive Chairman George Vradenburg issued the following statement:

“The details released today show that this FY 26 budget proposal would not just stall, but potentially reverse progress toward ending Alzheimer’s. We have made enormous progress over the past few years, and it is not time to go backward.

“By its own calculations, the government estimates that more than 96% of Alzheimer’s research projects would have to be rejected if Congress accepts this proposal. This means nearly every proposal for Alzheimer’s research would be rejected, and even some current research would likely be stopped in its tracks. In sum, this proposal would eliminate nearly all shots on goal for a cure. Adopting it would be an unnecessary, unwise, and untimely surrender.

“Half of all Americans say they have Alzheimer’s in their families. They deserve better.

“For decades, the United States has led the way in advancing treatments and earlier diagnoses for Alzheimer’s and dementia—progress made possible only through sustained investment in medical research.

“Alzheimer’s disease is a worsening crisis that cannot be ignored—and now is not the time to take our foot off the gas in developing treatments. We urge Congress to reject any proposed cuts and fight for the critical resources their constituents with Alzheimer’s and dementia need and deserve.”
