RESEARCH AND SCIENCE

A May 23, 2018 Drug Target Review article reported on a new study where a model estimates the lifetime risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease dementia. Risk factors include age, gender and preclinical biological changes in the brain which occur 10 to 20 years before symptoms appear. According to Ron Brookmeyer, PhD of the UCLA School of Public Health, “In the future, when treatments are available, this would be helpful, especially for people in the stages before the clinical symptoms appear. For example, those people with the highest 10-year risk of getting Alzheimer’s dementia would be high priority to volunteer for clinical trials evaluating Alzheimer’s medications or other therapies.” Also covered by Science Daily.

PROFILES IN COURAGE

A May 21, 2018 Las Vegas Review-Journal article honored writer and Alzheimer’s advocate Nancy Nelson, who has Alzheimer’s disease, and was named 2018 Nevada Senior Citizen of the Year. Since her diagnosis in 2013, Nelson has penned two poetry books exploring AD. “I’m very humbled by all of the people who backed me. I just never expected an accolade for something that helps me. It helps me because (Alzheimer’s) put me in a place where I never thought I would be, and that’s one of service. It’s just something I enjoy doing,” said Nelson.

DEMENTIA AND THE ARTS

A May 22, 2018 CISION PR Newswire release spotlighted, "Just See Me-Sacred Stories from the Other Side of Dementia,” a new book from Austin photographer Carmen Buck. The book shares families’ stories of dementia through eyes of compassion and love to spark conversations about dementia, and to honor people with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers. According to Buck, “Many families have no recent photographs of their loved ones until it is too late because they don't realize that honoring ordinary moments with compassionate photography is an important part of their journey."
