MUST WATCH

A June 20, 2018 KHON 2 broadcast segment focused on Alzheimer’s awareness in Waikiki, Hawaii with the First Annual Halia Memory Care Conference. David Troxel, co-creator of The Best Friend's Approach to Alzheimer's and Dementia, spoke about the importance of social support for people with Alzheimer’s disease. “Without an effective medicine, I think the treatment for Alzheimer’s and these other dementias is really you and me, and socialization and activities… Being a best friend to the person with Alzheimer’s. Having empathy, communicating well, doing things together. And if you create this social environment with lots of love and good care, you can reduce a lot of the challenging behaviors, impact cooperation, and give a better quality of life.”

GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES

A June 20, 2018 Bloomberg article focused on Christophe Weber, the first foreign-born CEO of Japan’s Takeda Pharmaceutical. When asked about why it’s so hard to develop treatments in Alzheimer’s disease, “The etiology is still not totally known — it’s better known but not still completely fully understood. And then the number of modalities that we can deliver or use to get access to the brain is more limited. That’s one of the reasons why we did this partnership with a company called Denali Therapeutics, because it’s a transport mechanism to bring a big, big, big molecule into the brain.”

REGIONAL HIGHLIGHTS

A June 20, 2018 T&D article featured Mary Ann Drummond, RN, who authored, "Meet Me Where I Am: An Alzheimer's Care Guide,” and co-authored, “Grandma and Me: A Kids’ Guide for Alzheimer’s & Dementia.” Drummond conducts Alzheimer's training sessions, including role play, and sharing educational concepts about AD care at caregiver symposiums and community health presentations. According to Drummond, “With persons living with dementia, oftentimes we find that there are still capabilities left that are able to be unlocked when we do a little deeper dive. And I think that’s what the outcome will be.”
