WASHINGTON, DC, September 23, 2016—The following is a statement by Faith United Against Alzheimer’s on Pope Francis’ remarks in honor of World Alzheimer’s Day on Wednesday, September 21.

Pope Francis said, “Today is the 23rd World Day for Alzheimer’s, which carries the theme ‘Remember me.’ I invite all those present to ‘remember,’ with the care of Mary and the tenderness of the Merciful Jesus, all those who are afflicted by this disease and their loved ones, so that they may know our closeness. We also pray for people who find themselves near the sick, even those with less obvious cases, that they may be seen with eyes full of love.”

The Faith United Against Alzheimer’s Coalition expresses gratitude to Pope Francis for his appeal to the faithful worldwide to remember and care for all those who are living with Alzheimer’s and their families. The Pope is shining a light on the 47 million people worldwide who are living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, sending a message of love and support. Leaders of all faiths are on the front lines of this devastating disease and must come together to speak out on the need for dignity and compassionate care for those living with Alzheimer’s disease and their care partners, while working urgently for a cure.

“We thank Pope Francis for raising his powerful voice on World Alzheimer’s Day in honor of the millions of people who are on this journey,” said Virginia Biggar, Executive Director of the Faith United Against Alzheimer’s Coalition.
