A February 17, 2016 New York Times Well blog post reported on new research linking dementia to heartburn drugs known as proton pump inhibitors. According to the article, “German researchers, using a database of drug prescriptions, studied P.P.I. use in 73,679 men and women older than 75 who were free of dementia at the start of the study. Over an average follow-up period of more than five years, about 29,000 developed Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. The study is in JAMA Neurology.”

A February 17, 2016 Puget Sound Business Journal article reported that “Fresh off a $10 million funding round, M3 Biotechnology is preparing for clinical trials for its Alzheimer’s drug.” According to the article, “CEO Leen Kawas said Wednesday that $8 million of the newly raised round will go toward prepping for trials and speeding up the development of drugs in its pipeline. The remaining $2 million will be used to run a Phase 1 clinical trial that will test the safety of the drug in humans.”

A February 17, 2016 Indian Country Today Media Network article reported that “More than one third of American Indians/Alaska Natives over age 65 can expect to develop dementia before age 90, according to a new study published online by Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association.”
