(ICYMI) According to a January 20, 2018 Woman’s Day article, there are a number of ways to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other age-related issues. The article calls-out the work of WomenAgainstAlzheimer’s, dedicated to women’s brain health with the We Won’t Wait campaign. Tips to reduce the risk of cognitive issues include engaging in physical activity, thinking in new or deeper ways, prioritizing sufficient sleep and sticking to a consistent schedule.

A February 4, 2018 The Advocate Alzheimer’s Q&A explored the phenomena of sundowning, “a state of increased agitation, confusion and anxiety that typically occurs in the late afternoon or evening in up to 66 percent of people affected by Alzheimer's disease or dementia.” During this time, wandering patterns begin, as confusion of day and night is common in people with AD. Although everyone is different, it can be helpful for caregivers to create an atmosphere with a lot of light, structured routines, and ensure the home is safe and secure.



A January 30, 2018 Medscape article reported on President Trump’s first State of the Union address. He spoke about an improved drug approval process at the US Food and Drug Administration. Adding, “…I have directed my administration to make fixing the injustice of high drug prices one of my top priorities for the year.” He is urging Congress to pass a "right-to-try" law, allowing people with terminal illnesses to try experimental therapies. He also spoke about paying more attention to veterans’ healthcare.

According to a February 4, 2018 The Telegraph article (subscription only), Alzheimer’s disease could be spotted seven years before symptoms first appear. A new memory test, developed by University College London, can pick up the very first hints of dementia.


CAREGIVING CORNER

A January 29, 2018 CISION news release focused on a new national survey of caregiving seniors from SCAN Health Plan, which finds that caregiving is a challenge that can create heavy physical, emotional and financial strains. According to Eve Gelb, “The good news is that help is available for caregivers seeking assistance. Nobody should take the weight of caregiving entirely on their own shoulders, and we are committed to finding solutions that can be widely shared and implemented. Our goal is to keep caregivers happy and healthy to ensure their responsibilities are fulfilling and not burdensome."
