Ten million baby boomers will die of this disease without a cure. One in eight individuals over age 65 have the disease, and a staggering one in two over 85 have Alzheimer's. In fact, every 70 seconds, someone is diagnosed with the disease. Each of these victims have at least two persons caring for them. Children of baby boomers will care for their parents and experience the emotional and financial burden of this disease.

This year alone, caring for Americans with Alzheimer's cost $172 billion in total costs, including Medicare and Medicaid expenditures, private insurance and out-of-pocket costs provided by caregivers. By contrast, we will spend a minimal $469 million researching treatments and cures this year. Unless a cure or treatment is found, the cumulative cost to care for Americans with the disease over the next 10 years will amount to $2 trillion and over 40 years, $20 trillion.

There is no other investment that would lower the costs of Medicare and Medicaid more than a medical breakthrough stopping Alzheimer's disease. An investment of $2 billion a year for 10 years can turn the tide against this disease. Preventing the onset of Alzheimer's by 5 years could save $50 billion a year in healthcare costs and save millions of American families from the disease in the next few decades.

Nearly 200 of the world's leading Alzheimer's researchers believe we can stop Alzheimer's in the next 10 years - if we make a substantial, sustained and targeted investment in research now. Science's vastly increased knowledge of the brain is creating new research opportunities and the very real potential of a world free of Alzheimer's. Ultimately, we can free ourselves and our children from the financial and emotional burden of paying for our inaction.
